Hello From Patagonia!

We're at the bottom of the world, cruising in and out of lovely fjords, rolling with the ocean (a lot), dealing with lousy internet, and getting ready to party our asses off on New Year's Eve!

Two days ago we stopped in Punta Arenas...frankly a bit of a shithole.  Our tour was boring (our guide didn't help)...there are just not a lot of "Highlights" in Punta Arenas.

They drove us up to this lookout.  Nice view, but, dude...fix up your space!  That tile would be an easy repair.  Come to find out...the whole city is like this.  Just like this.

They have this outdoor museum featuring all the original type of housing, stores, machines, etc. that were used in the development of the town.  Looked like Claude, Texas to me.

Except there were more wildflowers here.

Yep, just like Claude.

I'm outstanding in this field.

We went to the cemetery.  It was a lot like the Recoleta cemetery in Buenos Aires, but with a lot more red paint (blood) splashed on several of the mausoleums.  Seems most people in Chile are against the government (and the wealthy) for slaughtering indigenous peoples and taking over their lands.

They're also not big fans of the devaluation of their peso - every bank we saw had metal or boards over the windows because they'd all be smashed.  Statues of the local wealthy folks who dedicated parks and public areas have been torn down and/or defaced.  And there was graffiti everywhere denouncing the government and law enforcement - with some pretty specific requests.

Base of a statue with no bust

In the main square there is a really nice (untouched) statue of Magellan.

One side is Tierra del Fuego and the other Patagonia.

If you rub the Patagonia guy's foot, you'll get to return someday.

Maybe when they're not so angry.  We spent the afternoon on the ship.

The next days were at sea, and, while relaxing, also fairly uneventful, save for a champagne tasting (a nice break with fabulous tastes).  I never really thought about the differences in champagne since I don't drink it a lot...but you'd be surprised.  Joe and I came away with a new appreciation for the bubbly, and next time we buy some, it'll be the good stuff!  We especially like the Veuve Cliquot...delicately sweet with a dry finish...so good!

So now it's New Year's Eve.  We have a couple of parties to go to, and we know just what champagne to order!

Happy New Year, everybody!  Cheers!
