Merry Christmas - We're In The Falkland Islands

First of all, Merry Christmas!

We got all dressed up last night for dinner (and Joe's birthday), the waiters brought cake and sang, we won at trivia, won at blackjack, and had a bit too much to drink.  FTW!

Oh, and a fantastic sunset!

Today we're in the Falkland Islands.  One of the most remote windswept places on earth - three or so rocks in the south Atlantic - with a disputed beginning, a weird war, Spanish and Queen's English speakers, and fish & chips.  Go figure!

Historians can't quite agree on who first discovered the islands; there are several different accounts, none of which can be verified as the one true version.  But for most of its history, the country's provenance has been in contention.  England?  Argentina?  England?  In 1982, Argentina invaded.  Unprovoked.  Unexpected.  Ill-advised.

I mean,  Argentina's military against the British?  Let's just say while they caused some damage, they brought a knife to a gunfight.

These days the Falklands are very British.  Our tender landed on the jetty, and we were immediately thrust into a small town outside of London.

very British

Literally an Iron Lady

It was very windy today.

Very.  But we were lucky...we read several stories of cruise ships not being able to make port because bad weather and rough seas kept them away.  It was a fairly pleasant day, albeit a bit breezy.

We visited the local museum.  As I said, this place is very British, and they don't mind showing off their weaponry/might/capabilities.

Jet flyover

Also, this really old Monopoly set.  The tokens are printed cardboard attached to wooden blocks.

Lovely flowers everywhere

And a whale bone arch

Plenty of wildlife

Of course we had to sample the beer.

And in the neighborhoodiest of neighborhood bars, this was on the wall.  I love British humor.

Tomorrow we're back at sea, heading toward Ushaia and Tierra del Fuego...the bottom of the continent.   Hope everyone had a great Christmas!
