Oh, Well

Last night, right before we crawled into bed, Joe said, "I'd almost prefer to skip the tour tomorrow and just sleep in."  It was said in passing, as he stuck his toothbrush in his mouth, and I didn't give it much thought.

This morning, after a great night's sleep, I awoke before the alarm went off.  It was warm and cozy, and I wondered whether the 8am tour was one of our freebies or if we'd actually paid for it.  I slunk from the bed, grabbed our cruise file and headed to the bathroom for a quick check.  (It was a freebie.)

By the time I came out, Joe was up, and I asked just how serious he was about skipping the tour and just exploring Punta del Este on our own later in the day.  The gods of warm and cozy won out, and we snuggled back to sleep.

Not 30 minutes later, the cruise director broadcast shipwide that the weather was just too bad (and forecast to get worse), and we'd have to skip the port today.  High swells, rain, wind and cool temps.  Wait...isn't this supposed to be the first day of summer?????  Sigh.  I went back to sleep.

So we're heading on to our next stop, Puerto Madryn.  We had a day at sea today and will have another one tomorrow.  I don't really mind too much.  Punta del Este is a total beach town...missing the sun and sand on a wet cloudy cold day is fine by me.  But the pissing and moaning aboard the ship was crazy...as if Oceania controlled the weather.  I'm sure they don't make these decisions lightly, and completely keep in mind the safety of passengers and crew, but to hear some of the coffee talk, you'd think the deep state was alive and well in the cruise industry.

Anyone who'd booked an excursion would get a refund.  Anyone who'd arranged for a private tour in town would be assisted with canceling the tour and given a letter pleading for return of funds.  Oceania would do whatever they could to help a bad situation.

So, we had a late breakfast, we played BINGO, we drank bloody marys, we had a delicious lunch, we read, we took a nap, we watched a movie, we had a lovely dinner, we came in second in Trivia.  It was a fine day.  And, true to the captain's word, the weather worsened, throughout the day. The ship bounced along the high swells, winds buffeted windows and doors, and we all staggered about the hallways and dining areas.

I guess my point is, you make the best of the hand you're dealt.  And all the complainers...they're going to complain no matter what.

We're still at sea tomorrow, but hoping for better weather!
