Volcanoes and Waterfalls

Before I begin...here's the sunset from last night.  About 10:10pm.  WOW   Yeah, that's the moon.

Anyway, this morning we docked in Puerto Montt - a fairly industrial non-tourist town - and took a bus ride to the Osorno volcano ski center.  Chile has more than 2500 volcanoes...90 or so of them are active.

This is Calbuco...one of the more active ones.  It erupted Mount St. Helen's style four years ago.  It blew out the side of the mountain...fortunately it was not the side toward the lake.  The lake is gorgeous and about the size of Lake Tahoe.

But our tour was about Osorno volcano.  It looks similar to Mt. Fuji in Japan.  It hasn't erupted in quite a while.  There's a ski resort on it, and that's where we were headed.

It's just stunning.

At the top, we found a couple of local beers...pretty darn tasty!

Please don't explode while we're here!

We left the ski area and headed down the road to the Petrohue falls and rapids.  Flowing over lava fields, the mineral rich and glacier-fed water is amazing.  My camera does not do the color justice.  Aqua has a new color standard.

So clear

and frothy

The only downside was about a million of these giant assholes buzzing around looking for their next meal.

We ended the tour in the lakeside town of Puerto Varas.  Darling beach town founded by German pioneers.  The whole town looks like an alpine village...all in the shadow of Osorno.

Tomorrow is our last day at sea.  It's time to start packing as we dock and head to Valparaiso on Saturday.  Sigh.  It sure has been fun...but it's not quite over yet!
